10 MUST SEE Cult Classic Horror Films

Like to feel the hair on your neck stand straight up?

Want to impress your friends with your movie knowledge around Halloween? Then we have the list for you.

We polled all our staffers and came up with ten MUST SEE cult classic horror films.

This might be a yearly ritual for some who are running out of horror movies to watch in October — or you might be a new fan to the genre, whatever the case, with an ocean full of remakes and lack-luster rip-offs, it can be difficult traversing through the garbage to find the right horror film to cozy up with.

My suggestion? Travel back to an era when horror was groundbreaking and fresh filmmakers made new and original material that no one had ever seen before. I’m mostly referring to the late ’70s, ’80s, and early ’90s.

I’ve narrowed down 10 cult classic horror movies to watch around Halloween that you’ve probably never seen or haven’t watched in a long time.

Let’s get bloody.

10 MUST SEE Cult Classic Horror Films

Let the countdown begin!

10. Phantasm (1978)

This psychedelic terror adventure was considered to be one of the most disturbing horror films for years after the initial release. If you’re looking for a scary, weird time, this movie has it all and more. The film’s antagonist, the Tall Man, is a legendary horror icon that will surely creep you out. Directed by the independent genius Don Coscarelli at age 22.

9. The Fog (1979)

This is one of the best horror films of the 1970s and was Carpenter’s follow up project to Halloween. In this film, he perfected his craft in a lot of ways and really proved that he was here to stay as an auteur director. The Fog is a terrifying joy ride to embark on and I would recommend adding it to your collection if it’s not already there. Directed by the almighty John Carpenter.

8. Creepshow (1982)

A classic horror anthology that has five hilariously creepy segments that have stood the test of time and are still fun to watch. Stephen King, who wrote the film, also delivers a brilliantly funny performance in the role of Jordy Verrill. Directed by the godfather of horror George A. Romero.

7. Friday the 13th part 4: The Final Chapter (1984)

I know what you’re thinking — Seriously, part FOUR!? But this installment delivers all of the goods and stands out among the other sequels. With a classic performance by Crispin Glover and an earful of haunting sounds by the veteran composer Harry Manfredini, this one is sure to have you laughing and screaming. Directed by the talented NY native, Joseph Zito.

6. Re-animator (1985)

This adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s book was an instant underground hit the second it was released. People couldn’t believe the horrifying and humorous content they were witnessing. As shocking as the film is, it has a lot of brains and will satisfy all horror lovers’ appetites. Directed by the B horror legend Stuart Gordon.

5. Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part II (1986)

If you consider yourself a horror buff and you haven’t seen this film — you need to see it. You’re missing out on one wacky and unexpected horror sequel, one that shattered all expectations when it graced the screens in the mid ’80s. If you want fun, terrifying thrills, then pick up this gem directed by the one and only Tobe Hooper.

4. Night of the Creeps (1986)

This is one underrated piece of “B” gold that has been skipped over undoubtedly. One of the first comically styled satire horror films that blended sub-genres and comedy into a hybrid masterpiece of laughs, chills, and thrills. This film gets two thumbs-up — why? Because Tom Atkins, that’s why. Directed by the wiz kid Fred Dekker at age 24.

3. Pumpkinhead (1988)

This scary fright-fest encompasses all of the classic horror staples and pushes the line when it comes to its PG-13 rating. It’s a must-see for adults, but it’s also a good one for the kiddos — it’ll scare them right to bed. This film was the directorial debut of practical FX master Stan Winston who created many iconic creatures and characters for decades.

2. Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992)

With the crazy amount of remakes that exist, it’s no wonder one would pass on this film. But you’d be missing out on some brilliant performances from Anthony Hopkins, Gary Oldman, and Winona Ryder. This specially crafted work of art was directed by the Godfather of drama, Francis Ford Coppola. Don’t let that fool you — this movie is really scary.

1. In The Mouth Of Madness (1994)

Talk about one helluva trip! This movie is a dark ride to take, but it has so many moments of pure horror gold that it’s hard to not put it on the list. From the beginning you’ll be sucked in, wanting to solve the film’s questions alongside its protagonist played by Sam Neill and get to the bottom of the nightmare that consumes him. A fun horror feast cooked up by the master John Carpenter.
